SPEECH BY SHRI K.R.NARAYANAN, PRESIDENT OF INDIA, WHILE ACCEPTING CREDENTIALS FROM MR. DAGO TSHERING, AMBASSADOR-DESIGNATE OF BHUTAN TO INDIA

NEW DELHI, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1998

Excellency

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you as Ambassador of the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan to India. Your long association with India in various capacities has undoubtedly contributed to the furthering of the extremely close relations between our two countries.

I fully reciprocate and endorse your view that our bilateral relations are exemplary and have stood the test of time. The bonds of friendship between our two countries are based on trust, mutual understanding and mutually beneficial cooperation. As both our countries approach the new millennium, I am confident that the unique ties of tradition, proximity and culture that bind our two peoples and countries together will become ever stronger.

Your Excellency, we in India look forward to the privilege of welcoming His Majesty, The King of Bhutan on his forthcoming visit to India. Under the able leadership and inspiration of His Majesty, Bhutan has made significant progress in all areas of political, social and economic development. His Majesty's efforts to cater to the well being and security of his people have earned him great respect and popularity not only among his own people but in India as well.

India always considered it a special honour to be a partner in the overall economic development of Bhutan, particularly in sectors like industry, infrastructure, communications, education, training and development of human resources. We hope to further this commitment in the years ahead.

Excellency, I wish to reiterate my happiness at your appointment as your country's Ambassador to India and wish to assure you that the Government of India will provide all the necessary support to you in your efforts to further the close ties of friendship and cooperation between our countries. I am certain that with your rich knowledge of India and sustained contacts, you will be playing an important role in achieving this goal. I take this opportunity to request Your Excellency to convey my warm greetings and personal regards to His Majesty, the King, and best wishes to the people of Bhutan.
