SPEECH
BY SHRI K.R.NARAYANAN, PRESIDENT OF INDIA, ON THE OCCASION OF THE PRESENTATION OF COLOURS
TO THE JAMMU AND KASHMIR LIGHT INFANTRY REGIMENT
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1998
I
am extremely happy to be with you today in this colourful, solemn and
inspiring ceremony. It is a great pleasure to present the Colours to the
Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment (JAK LI). I extend to the Commanding
Officers and all ranks of JAK LI my warmest greetings.
Raised
in 1948, the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment, though one of
the youngest in the Indian Army, has grown to be one of our largest Regiments.
This has been solely due to the valour, fighting skill, patriotic fervour
and soldierly conduct displayed by all ranks of your Regiment during the
major wars forced on our country since attaining independence. Units of
your Regiment have served with distinction with the United Nations Peace
Keeping Forces in Somalia and the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka.
The
Regiment, in its composition, is a miniature India in itself and is a
perfect example of national integration. The Regiment's performance in
war and peace has been commendable and praise-worthy. The Battalions of
the Regiment earned their share of decorations for various activities
in operations and otherwise.
I am
confident that you will continue to consider no sacrifice too great for
the honour and integrity of our Motherland. I am positive that the Regiment
will march from strength to strength under its colours which will inspire
you to attain greater glory for yourselves and our nation.
I congratulate
you on your smart turn out, bearing and steadfastness on parade. I wish
you every success.
Thank you
