SPEECH
BY SHRI K.R.NARAYANAN, PRESIDENT OF INDIA, WHILE ACCEPTING
THE CREDENTIALS FROM MR. LOUIS SYLVESTRE RADEGONDE, HIGH
COMMISSIONER-DESIGNATE OF THE ARAB REPUBLIC OF SEYCHELLES TO INDIA
NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER
21, 1998
Excellency,
It gives me great pleasure
to receive and welcome you on your appointment as the new High Commissioner
of Seychelles to India. The friendship and cordiality that has developed
between our country and yours at all levels is a true example of South South
Co-operation. India and Seychelles are partners in progress. We share more
than a common ocean; we share ideas and aspirations.
We live in a world that
is changing very rapidly, and each country has to adjust to these changes.
I am particularly happy to note that the friendship and co-operation between
India and Seychelles has endured, because it is based on the solid foundations
of mutual respect and equality. Both our countries continue to co-operate
closely at the international levels. I am sure that, working together, both
our countries could endeavour to bring about a more just world order.
Excellency, on the bilateral
front we have had excellent co-operation between our two countries on many
variegated issues of common interests implemented through the instruments
of the Indo-Seychelles Joint Commission established in 1989. I am glad to
note that the Joint Commission which met in Victoria in February this year
had useful exchange of views on further consolidating bilateral ties between
our two countries. Our ITEC programme has also served as a very useful vehicle
for bilateral co-operation. I am sure that with your appointment we could
further our co-operation programme and even diversify into new areas. I
want to assure Your Excellency that you can count on our continued co-operation
in your efforts to make Seychelles a prosperous nation playing its role
in the peace and stability of the region.
Excellency, I once again
welcome you to India and wish you a very productive, fruitful and enjoyable
tenure. I wish to convey through you, Mr. High Commissioner, on behalf of
the Government and the people of India, and on my own behalf, warm and cordial
greetings to His Excellency Mr. France Albert Rene, the President of the
Republic of Seychelles and to the friendly people of Seychelles.
Thank you
