SPEECH BY SHRI K. R. NARAYANAN, PRESIDENT OF INDIA, WHILE ACCEPTING THE CREDENTIALS FROM MR. O. NYAMDAVAA, AMBASSADOR-DESIGNATE OF MONGOLIA TO INDIA

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 21, 1998

Excellency,

I have great pleasure in accepting the Letter of Credence appointing you as the distinguished representative of your great country to India. I take this opportunity to congratulate you and wish you success in your new assignment.

India cherishes the age old, warm and friendly relationship with Mongolia. Our contacts span over 2000 years. We share spiritual values going back to ancient times. These values provide a strong foundation for friendship and understanding among our two ancient civilisations.

The Treaty of Friendly Relations and Co-operation signed in February, 1994 during the visit of then President Ochirbat provides the framework for our relations. I cherish the memories of my visit to your beautiful country in 1996 as Vice-President and the warmth of welcome accorded to me by the government and people of Mongolia. The exchanges between our two Parliaments which represent the will of our two peoples has contributed to enhancing mutual understanding. The visit of H.E. Mr. N. Bagabandi, President of Mongolia in his then capacity as Chairman of State Great Hural in January 1996, has contributed to strengthening mutual understanding and co-operation.

Our recent interaction in diverse fields has been to mutual benefit. I am happy to note the success of the experiments carried out in the "Friendship Farm" established in Darkhan City. I am happy also at the work being done by the Rajiv Gandhi Vocational Training Centre at Ulaanbaatar. These are true symbols of our friendship.

May I, Excellency, once again express my happiness at your appointment as Ambassador of Mongolia to India. You have the responsibility of promoting these relations. We are confident that you will play an active and effective role in this context and your understanding of India born out of your long association with India will make an immense contribution to friendship between our two countries. I would like to assure your Excellency of my Government's full co-operation in this task. I would like to wish you a happy, productive and fulfilling tenure in India. May I convey the good wishes of the Government and people of India to President Natsagiin Bagabandi and to the Government and people of Mongolia.

Thank you

Jai Hind
